"My Recollections of the War" by Sgt. Fountain Shakelford of the 36th
VA INF REGT., Mountain Riflemen, is a kind of "Cold Mountain" book for
the Confederate soldier, in that it is an intimate, authentic diary of day-to-day life of a soldier with the insights and emotions that come from war. He begins his journey full of hope, born in the state of Virginia, which will become the state of West Virginia, and fights his first battle on his home ground, Carnifex Ferry, VA [WV], which is a stunning win for his Confederate Gen. Floyd. His journey spans from Tennessee to Washinton City [D. C.], and is fraught with danger and violence, marching, fighting, and hardship, and a severe wound to his face. In between is courtship and a "wee bit of mountain dew" and camp shenanigans. Towards the end of the war he visits in his father in the mountains of Nicholas county, only to leave on the run through the woods after dark. And, in the end, he talks about the confusion on the day of Lee's surrender, and the "bloodshed and carnage the like, which had never been witnessed on this continent."

It took less than an hour to read, so checking it out was quick and educational. Because the book is short, you can get the whole story of the War from the author’s perspective in a heartbeat – certainly in one short sitting.
Fountain Shakleford was a young man in what is now (unfortunately) West Virginia. Volunteering early in the war with just under 100 men from his town, he went to serve in the local Nicholas County unit led by Captain John G. Newman, which was Company F of the 36th Virginia Infantry Regiment – or the Mountain Riflemen.
The 36th Virginia spent most of the War in West Virginia and the Valley, missing most of the terrible fighting which fills the history of the Army of Northern Virginia. Shakleford does have a lot of info on Early’s movement on Washington DC in the summer of 1864, and Sheridan’s reprisals in repayment for that raid.
In this folksy story, he describes the enthusiasm and mischief his unit had early in the War but by the end it’s a more depressing story – after being wounded he comes back to his company and doesn’t recognize it, since there are so few of the original men and so many conscripted replacements. He describes coming out of one fight with no surviving officers – he doesn’t say so, but he is the senior leader in the company as Orderly Sergeant (First Sergeant). There are many tales of his shenanigans – stealing a watermelon and making deals to get food and shelter where it is hard to find. Clearly he was a fast talker who cared deeply for his men and did what he could to take care of them – legality being a secondary consideration.
At the end of the book, there is a short summary of the unit filling in a handful of details to help the reader understand the story. I found this very helpful since it covered a few gaps in the original text.

Diary of Operations of the 36th VA INF REGT, Company F
By John M. Johnson
This is an intimate look at the life of Civil War soldiers. Three of the brothers of my direct ancestors were in this unit. One, SGT Isaac Prottsman Hughes, was killed at Piedmont, VA 5 June 1864 by artillery fire. Alexander Wiseman was captured at Piedmont and held as a POW at Camp Morton. Natus Nutter was a POW at Camp Chase, exchanged in March 1863, and later wounded at Piedmont. Both survived. This diary, along with the 36th Virginia Infantry, of the Virginia Regimental Histories Series, gives a good understanding of the day to day events, big and small, in the lives of the men of the 36th. It is a treasured possession, even on Kindle. Several Chapters have been lost, but this does not detract from the Diary.
